The Atelier Philosophy
Custom & Bespoke Rugs
Woven Bliss is a bespoke textile atelier serving a discerning clientele of interior designers, architects, hospitality developers, commercial specifiers, and private collectors across South Africa and the globe. Our studio brings a considered creative vision to bespoke rug design, crafting tailored solutions for international projects that reflect the purpose, atmosphere, and individual character of each space.
We do not offer off-the-shelf solutions. Every commission is conceived in close dialogue with the client — calibrated to the precise dimensions, atmosphere, material language, and acoustic requirements of a room. The result is a rug that does not merely occupy a space, but defines it.
Johannesburg Tufting Atelier
Our flagship custom pieces are hand-tufted through our Johannesburg atelier — a workshop of considerable heritage, established in 1986. Over nearly four decades, its master craftspeople have developed an unrivalled command of pile construction, sculpted carving, tonal layering, and the faithful translation of sophisticated design intent into plush, tactile form.
The atelier expertly handles a diverse range of premium fibres, from the structural resilience of 100% pure New Zealand wool to the luminous finish of bamboo silk. We also source and integrate bespoke materials tailored to exact project specifications. Our tufting capabilities range from dense 12mm commercial profiles (3kg/sqm) to luxurious 20mm residential weights (5kg/sqm). For heavily textured or sculptural pieces, we execute complex multi-pile heights ranging from 10mm up to 35mm. Crucially for our hospitality partners, our hand-tufted production is fully fire-tested and certified for commercial application.

Cape Town Weaving Studio
For interiors that call for a more organic, artisanal register, we partner with a small, highly specialized hand-spinning and weaving atelier in Cape Town to produce flatweaves of quiet distinction. This studio works with an extraordinary palette of natural and sustainable fibres—including locally sourced South African Merino wool, mohair, and cotton, alongside hand-spun Indian linen and hemp, silk, grasses, bast fibres, and thoughtfully curated recycled materials.
Made to precise measure and developed around a project’s specific colour palette, these pieces carry unparalleled warmth, texture, and understated refinement into residential, hospitality, and commercial environments. Our Cape Town studio also produces bespoke scatter cushions and luxury throws — allowing the textile narrative of a commission to extend coherently across rugs, upholstery, and soft furnishing details.

Himalayan Hand-Knotted Commissions
For collectors and clients demanding heirloom-grade provenance, Woven Bliss works directly with specialist generational weavers in Nepal. Our artisan partners are masters in the ancient art of Tibetan hand-knotting, creating exceptional pieces of unrivalled craftsmanship that stand the test of time.
Material selection is entirely guided by your project’s specification. We source and integrate a limitless spectrum of premium fibres—from high-altitude wools and luminous botanical silks to extraordinary bespoke accents, including 24K solid gold-coated fibres for exclusive corporate commissions and mining house boardrooms. These creations boast a timeless appeal that transcends transient trends, serving as a lasting architectural investment for the most refined environments.

The Commission Process
01
Brief & Specification
We begin with a thorough understanding of the project: architectural context, room scale, usage requirements, traffic patterns, desired material direction, and the broader design narrative. The more considered the brief, the more precisely we can respond.
02
Proposal, Colour Matching & Strike-Off
A formal pro-forma is prepared reflecting size, construction, and materials. Where required, we facilitate precise Pantone colour matching. All custom yarn is processed using an acid dye method to guarantee commercial-grade colorfastness. We then produce strike-off samples for sign-off.
03
Atelier Production
Each commission is assigned to the most appropriate production partner — tufting, weaving, or knotting. Every bespoke tufted commission is photographically recorded during production and issued a unique provenance reference number, ensuring lifetime traceability.
04
Delivery & Installation
We coordinate logistics for final delivery and provide specialist support for complex installations across large-scale residential, hospitality, retail, and commercial projects, including stair applications and underlay specification.
