Real rooms seldom match standard rug sizes. Our bespoke service starts with your architecture and furniture plan, then works backwards to the ideal dimensions.
Approximate maximum sizes:
- Handknotted rugs – up to approximately 12 × 8 metres.
- Handtufted rugs – up to approximately 4 × 12 metres.
- Handwoven rugs – up to approximately 8.5 × 12 metres.
For projects that extend beyond these dimensions, we handle each commission individually and can advise on special constructions or multi-panel solutions.
Custom shapes are virtually limitless. Ovals, gentle curves, organic silhouettes, stepped landings, stair flights with winders, cut-outs around fireplaces, or rugs that follow the lines of a bay window or irregular room – if you can sketch it or show it on a floor plan, we can explore how to realise it as a beautifully crafted floor piece.
Materials & Constructions
Each commission begins with a conversation about how the rug will be used and the atmosphere you want to create. We then advise on the most suitable construction and fibre.
Handknotted rugs
Time-honoured construction with exceptional longevity, crafted in Nepal using fine yarns and nuanced colour work. Ideal when you want heirloom quality, subtle detail and a piece that will age gracefully over decades.
Handtufted rugs
Flexible in shape and design, produced by skilled tufters using a hand-operated tufting gun. Excellent for strong graphics, defined borders and layered pile heights in living rooms, passages and suites.
Handwoven Rugs
Flatweave and textured weaves created on traditional looms, bringing a relaxed, tactile quality. Well suited to casual living spaces, under dining tables and layered schemes.
Custom outdoor performance rugs
Woven from robust fibres that echo the look and hand of natural materials, yet engineered for South African outdoor conditions. Designed as bespoke outdoor rugs, sized and shaped for pool decks, covered patios, verandas and lodge terraces.

Concept & materials
We propose construction types, fibres, palettes and borders, and discuss practical considerations such as underlay, stair rods, budget and lead times.
Design development
Layouts, proportions and pattern placement are refined to sit correctly with furniture, circulation and architectural features.
Sampling & approval
Where required, yarn or pile samples are supplied for you to review colour and texture. Once approved, we confirm the final quotation.
Weaving & delivery
Your piece is crafted by trusted workshops worldwide, carefully finished and checked, then delivered. Installer recommendations are available for stair runners and complex projects.

We work closely with interior designers, architects and procurement teams on residential, boutique hospitality and lodge projects.
Our support includes guidance on sizing and placement across multiple rooms, coordination with existing finishes, joinery and artwork, and assistance with project phasing, budgets and lead times.
For select private clients and trade projects, we also consult on broader carpet and wall-to-wall solutions by request. These commissions are handled discreetly and quoted individually.

What custom pieces can Woven Bliss create?
We design and produce bespoke rugs, carpet runners, stair runners and outdoor rugs. Depending on the project, your piece may be handwoven in South Africa, handtufted locally or abroad, or handknotted by specialist weavers in Nepal. We also work with custom shapes and made-to-measure dimensions.
What sizes can you make?
Most bespoke rugs and runners are made to your exact measurements. As a guide, our workshop partners regularly produce handknotted rugs up to approximately 12 m × 8 m, handtufted rugs up to around 4 m × 12 m, and handwoven rugs up to roughly 8.5 m × 12 m. Larger or unusually shaped projects are discussed case by case.
Can you do custom shapes and cut-outs?
Yes. We can create organic, free-form and geometric shapes, curves, scalloped edges, round and oval rugs, and pieces that follow architectural details such as fireplaces, columns or bay windows. For complex layouts we can work from your architect’s plan or a site template.
How does the bespoke design process work?
The process usually includes five stages:
1. Consult: We discuss your space, measurements, budget and style direction (in person or online).
2. Design: Our design team develops concepts, colour palettes and artwork based on your brief.
3. Approve: You review visuals and, where appropriate, physical yarn or pile samples.
4. Create: The rug or runner is handmade by our artisan partners.
5. Deliver: We arrange delivery and, for stair runners or complex installations,
can assist with recommending professional fitters.
Do you really offer custom outdoor rugs?
Yes. Woven Bliss is one of the few companies in South Africa offering fully custom outdoor rugs and runners. These are generally made from UV-stabilised, weather-resistant fibres suitable for patios, poolsides and covered outdoor spaces, and are designed to coordinate with your outdoor furniture and architecture.
What are the typical lead times?
Lead times depend on construction method, size and design complexity. Handtufted and outdoor pieces are usually the quickest, while handknotted rugs from Nepal take the longest. Most bespoke orders fall in the range of roughly 6–16 weeks, with an estimated timeline confirmed during quotation.
Can you match my fabrics, paint colours or branding?
Absolutely. You can brief us using fabric swatches, paint chips, Pantone references, timber samples or brand guidelines. We translate these into yarn selections and strike-off samples so your rug, runner or stair runner ties in perfectly with the rest of the scheme.
Do you supply stair rods, underlay and finishing details?
Yes. For stair runners we can supply decorative brass, stainless steel or other metal stair rods, as well as premium underlay and edge finishes. The rods are decorative and used together with professional installation and tack strips for a secure, long-lasting fit.
How do I care for a bespoke rug or runner?
Regular vacuuming, prompt blotting of spills and rotating rugs in high-traffic areas will keep them looking their best. Handknotted and handtufted rugs should be professionally cleaned when required.
